Prince William Medical Center Celebrates 60 Years of Serving the Community
Prince William Medical Center (PWMC), located in Manassas, Virginia, has been providing excellent healthcare services to the greater Prince William County area for 60 years. The hospital is now a part of the UVA Health system, and its CEO, Erik Shannon, and other leaders recently reflected on the significance of this milestone.
The History of PWMC
The hospital opened its doors in June 1964, but its history can be traced back to a health committee formed by nine women from the Women’s Club of Manassas in 1961. The committee laid the foundation for what would later become the hospital auxiliary known as The Pink Ladies. Over the years, the group evolved into a robust team that has contributed over $6.8 million to various hospital initiatives and volunteered over 2.2 million hours of service.
Reflecting on the hospital’s history, Steve Danziger, the current board chair, said, “In the beginning, 60 years ago, it was such a small community hospital that the Board had keys to open the doors. We all truly appreciate the future of where this facility is going.”
UVA Partnership and Advancements
PWMC has been a part of the UVA Health system since 2014. The partnership has brought about significant advancements in healthcare services and facilities. Haymarket Medical Center, which is a part of PWMC, celebrated its 10th anniversary in March 2024. Culpeper Medical Center, another UVA Health partner, will celebrate 65 years of operations in 2025.
Thanks to the UVA partnership, PWMC has adopted telemedicine activities and integrated all its facilities on one MyChart system. The hospital also boasts of new technology and equipment, making it a cutting-edge healthcare facility.
Commitment during the Covid-19 Pandemic
During the Covid pandemic, PWMC and UVA Health remained committed to serving the community. The hospital treated Covid patients while adhering to strict safety protocols. Board members, led by Steve Danziger, organized a “thank you walk” to express gratitude to everyone entering or leaving the hospital.
“It was a truly special moment. With life back to normal now, we’ve returned to engaging with one of the most diverse populations in the country,” Steve said.
In Conclusion
As PWMC commemorates its 60th year of serving the community, it is also looking forward to a bright future. The hospital’s partnership with UVA Health has brought about significant advancements in healthcare services and facilities. PWMC has a rich history and a strong commitment to serving the community, and it looks to the future with optimism and excitement.
