Amrita Hospital has launched its Centre of Excellence in CAR T Cell Therapy. “CAR-T cell therapy enables us to harness the power of our immune system to target cancer cells with precision, offering new hope to patients with previously untreatable conditions,” the hospital stated. It added the groundbreaking approach can provide long-term remission for certain blood cancers.
What is CAR T Cell Therapy?
CAR T Cell Therapy is a type of immunotherapy treatment that uses the patient’s own immune cells to fight cancer cells. This therapy involves taking T cells from a person’s blood and modifying them to produce chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) on their surface. These receptors allow T cells to recognize and attach to specific proteins, called antigens, on cancer cells. After the T cells are modified, they are returned to the patient’s body where they can recognize and destroy cancer cells.
Advantages of CAR T Cell Therapy
The advantages of CAR T Cell Therapy are:
- Effective against certain types of blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma, that are resistant to other treatments
- Potentially provides long-term remission
- Does not damage healthy cells like other cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy
Inauguration of the Centre
Shri George Kurian, minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, and Minority Affairs, inaugurated the center. “India is rapidly progressing in the health sector, and it is a great achievement that advanced treatments like CAR T Cell Therapy are now accessible to common people within our own country,” he said. “Previously, leukemia patients had to rely on foreign countries for such treatments, which were prohibitively expensive. For the past 25 years, Amrita Hospital has been fulfilling Amma’s wish to provide world-class treatment at affordable costs to everyone,” Kurian added.
