New Veterinarian Clinic Opens in Columbia Valley, Providing Much-Needed Healthcare to Animals
The Columbia Valley has recently welcomed a new veterinarian clinic, located in Canal Flats, to serve animals in need of medical attention. The Columbia Valley Veterinary Clinic held its grand opening on June 21, 2019, offering medical services to a range of animals including horses, cows, dogs, and cats. The new clinic is a welcome addition to the upper part of Columbia Valley, which, until now, has had only one other veterinary clinic.
Dr. Sarah Ort: The Owner of Columbia Valley Veterinary Clinic
The Columbia Valley Veterinary Clinic is owned by Dr. Sarah Ort, a veterinarian with several years of experience working in the valley. Ort grew up in Ontario, where she developed a love for animals from a young age. After completing her degree, Ort moved to British Columbia to gain more experience as a veterinarian by volunteering at a vet clinic while living with her aunt in Coquitlam.
It wasn’t long before Ort fell in love with BC and decided to pursue a career working with animals. She attended the Ontario Veterinary Clinic but soon moved back west to take a job with the Steeples Veterinary Clinic in Cranbrook. It was here that she met her partner, who manages the Columbia Lake Ranch, located between Fairmont Hot Springs and Canal Flats.
After working for the Invermere Veterinary Clinic for some time, Ort decided to transition from being a mobile vet to building her own facility. Her vision was to provide a positive work culture and welcoming atmosphere for both staff and animals.
Growing Demand for Veterinarians in the Columbia Valley
With only one other veterinarian clinic in the upper part of the Columbia Valley, the opening of Columbia Valley Veterinary Clinic is a much-needed addition to the region. Ort has built a 4,000 square foot facility to provide much-needed healthcare to a wide range of animals.
As the clinic’s name suggests, it serves the entire Columbia Valley region, including both Canal Flats and Invermere. The community has been supportive of Ort’s new clinic, especially given the shortage of qualified veterinarians in the region.
Ort has plans to grow her clinic to include up to four veterinarians, hiring staff who share her vision for providing quality veterinary care in a positive and welcoming environment. The primary goal is to ensure happy staff, which results in better care for animals.
Purpose and Design of the Clinic
The design of the clinic incorporated the use of recycled wood materials and high ceilings to provide natural light, contributing to a warm and welcoming atmosphere. As Ort notes, the veterinarian business can be stressful, with long hours and challenging conditions. Creating a positive social and physical environment for staff contributes to combating both burnout and compassion fatigue that are rampant in the industry.
