Straughn High School Graduate Receives Honors Award at Auburn University
Avery Bates, a 2020 graduate of Straughn High School, was recently awarded the Edgar C. Gentle III Honors Award during Auburn University’s Honors College Eagles of Excellence program. Bates received a bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences Pre-Vet, earning summa cum laude honors and a 3.8+ GPA.
Background and Achievements
Bates attributes her success to the high expectations set upon her by her professors at both Straughn High School and Auburn University’s Honors College. She completed Auburn’s entire Honors curriculum, including the Senior Capstone Experience and was an Honors Ambassador for the university. Bates’ extracurricular activities during her time in college mainly involved the Honors College, and she met some of her best friends while living in the Honors College dorm.
Bates plans to further her education at Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in early August and become a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) candidate in 2028. She hopes to challenge herself and find many more passions in veterinary medicine through her coursework. Upon graduation, Bates plans to continue her education as a resident dependent upon the specialty of her choosing.
Community Support and Future Goals
Bates’ success can be attributed in part to the support of her family, friends, and the Straughn community. Growing up in a tight-knit community, she always had someone she could reach out to if she needed help, advice, or a prayer when times got tough. Bates credits her upbringing in a household where she was raised to have goals and strive towards them as the biggest reason for her success.
Ultimately, Bates hopes to leave her mark on the world by committing herself to the betterment of animals and the humans around them. She believes that her time at Straughn High School and Auburn University have prepared her well for the rigors of veterinary school and beyond.
Conclusion
Bates’ impressive academic accomplishments and dedication to her field serve as an inspiration to students and professionals alike. Her passion for animal welfare and desire to make a positive impact on the world exemplify the values of a true leader in the veterinary field. We congratulate Avery Bates on her achievements so far and wish her the best of luck as she continues her journey at Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and beyond.
